TGIF

Email Print
Clock 22. December 2009 by A. Shane Nixon
I’ll go (not so far) out on a limb here and say that most everyone loves a Friday. In our ever more “always accessible” world, the reasons we do so may be more sentimental than real, but changes like one so engrained as TGIF take time to happen. So for now, even if your weekend is something like Wednesday and Thursday, I’d bet you have been happy to see Friday come before.

And this year, Christmas day rolls around on Friday.

I wonder if everyone will be as happy to see 5:00 come on THIS Friday afternoon. I read a statistic one time that said more serious bouts of depression “start” during the holidays than at any other time. Think about it. By this Friday at 5 PM, most of us will have seen the whirlwind of wrapping paper and the indulgence of way too much food come and go. Sure, maybe there is one last meal, or one more cousin’s house to visit, but for the most part, this Friday afternoon marks the end of an incredible build up. Months and months of preparation, days and days of anticipation, and hours and hours of expectation gone in the blink of an eye.

Not me, and not this year. I am vowing to make Friday last. More precisely, I am challenging myself to make the spirit of THIS Friday go well into the new year and beyond. I don’t think there is a “how to” guide on doing that . . . or maybe there is.

You know how we feel on Friday at 5:00? Well, all we have to do is make that an “all the time” feeling. And this Friday we celebrate the One who makes that possible. We celebrate the coming of our King!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
