Health care reflects Christ

Email Print
Clock 12. January 2010 by Leigh Hebbard, Cedar Park, Texas
In the Jan 2, 2010, issue (Nov. 18, 2009, online) of the Biblical Recorder, guest columnist Tom Ehrich is certainly on target in pointing out that the rascals on Wall Street have not changed any of their risky and greed-fueled behavior. Yet, he vilifies only New York financiers. Sadly, the condition he writes of is far more pervasive than just New York City. The same greed is on constant display in Greenville, Wilson, Raleigh, Charlotte and most other cities in North Carolina. It is also the prevailing mindset in the many cities of Texas, California, Florida and other points all across this land.

Moreover, that same greed has found its way into the church of Jesus Christ. These are the ones who continue to stand against all the principles espoused by the Lord when he preached the “Sermon on the Mount.” Few, dreadfully few, take those words to heart. If this were not so, long ago we would have instituted a national health care program that would honor the name of our Lord and truly help the downtrodden and disenfranchised. Alas, methinks the church for the most part is not serious about listening to the voice of Jesus and his teaching.

On the other hand, if someone believed that a nationalized health care system would degrade the quality and availability of care (see Canada), then the most loving thing to do would be to oppose such a system.

Opposition to Government Health Care means one is not taking the Sermon on the Mount to heart? I seriously doubt any such institution of national health care will bring any glory to the Lord Jesus.

Allow me just one response to what has been posted in opposition to my original email. The reference by B. Hobbs to "(Canada)" is just not a valid criticism of my post. I have many relatives in Canada and they continue to be amazed at our total misunderstanding of their system of health care. While at times the waiting period for an appointment may be quite long, the truth of the matter is that their system far exceeds what we have here. And their costs are far below anything we have to pay. By the way, the point seems to be always missed that if we increase taxes to fund a national system of health care, then the costs for health insurance (already sky high for everyone) would be eliminated. But beyond all those arguments, I stand by my original post that as disciples of Jesus Christ, we ought to be championing a national health care plan as it seems it is the only way the downtrodden and disenfranchised will ever have access to satisfactory health care in this the greatest nation in the world.

"The love of money is the root of all evil."

Why should healthcare costs rise at 3 times the inflation rate? Why should lawyers be advertising constantly for class action lawsuits on everything healthcare from asbestos to bad results from medication? Why should people without funds always be relegated to the Emergency Room of the Hospital?

Why can't we bring this filthy rich thing under better control with decent competition between doctors, clinics, and hospitls?

Does everyone in America really believe there is a pill for everything and we are going to live forever? Are you telling your Doctor what magic and expensive pill to give you so you feel like you at 20 again?

Nationalized Health Care simply means citizens from rich to poor will have access. People with pre-existing conditions can find a reasonably priced alternative. All medical professionals might just have to live a less luxerious life. Hospitals might just have to use carpets / computers / wallpaper the same 10-20 years we do at home.

Were it competitive and following the Hippocratic Oath rather than so money driven, we would not have to be talking about this at all.

It's the money, folks, it's the money--and it has gotten way out of hand!

Do I miss out on detail and understanding what you are saying? Probably, but I think I won overall by reading it.

Great article. I wish more people could learn to disagree respectfully. It would make for more interesting discussions.

The main question: What are we really talking about in simple terms????

Thus far all we see and hear is a politicized diatribe that we need it / a many page proposal is passed by the House / now 1 newly elected senator gives Filibuster power of delay to the Senate.

Meanwhile, millions are uninsured with little medical attention available for serious problems. Costs of medicine and procedures are out the roof. Hospital aspirin are often charged at $10 per tablet! Lawyers have big office buildings across from major hospitals so they can get rich too!
